Topic: Can AI persuade Taiwanese Voters

Abstract:Artificial intelligence increasingly mediates democratic politics, both through the content citizens encounter and the systems they interact with directly. This talk synthesizes emerging research on two forms of AI-mediated political communication: AI-generated visual content circulating through social media and conversational AI systems that provide political information and advice. Drawing on studies of elections and public opinion in the United States and Taiwan, I examine when AI amplifies existing political communication, when it changes attitudes, and how these effects depend on political and geopolitical context. Together, these cases suggest that understanding AI’s democratic consequences requires studying not only what AI produces, but also how citizens engage with AI as an increasingly active intermediary in political life.
